Background to the Allotment

Hi Everyone,

I’m new at ‘blogging’, so I hope everyone will bear with me.

My allotment is based in Cumbria, it’s not adjoined to any other allotments and is literally a minute away from my house so it is really convenient.

I first started renting my allotment in June 2004. It was in quite a bad state, covered in some sort of lily and so much bindweed and couch grass it looked like a field you could not see any soil. We (my husband, dad and myself) decided to rent a mini-digger, fortunately we knew someone we could rent one cheap from. We managed to dig huge sods of couch grass out. After that it was a case of digging and sifting the soil by hand. This took well over a year to do.

I then re-built an old shed in one corner of the garden, luckly there was already a cement square laid down so built it on that. I also bought a pond liner for £25 from my local garden centre and with help from my husband we built the pond, which now has 5 fish in it and a frog!!

I bought a greenhouse, my most extravagant purchase for the garden, but well worth it. Again after shifting all the grass we found another patch of cement, so built the greenhouse on that.

Last year my husband built me two large compost bins from “recycled” pallets.

Well I think that sort of explains the background to the allotment.
